DE GIST GURU: WHO IS AFRAID OF GMB? ‘Woe to thee that spoilest, ...

WHO IS AFRAID OF GMB? ‘Woe to thee that spoilest, and thou wast not spoiled; and dealest treacherously, and they dealt not treacherously with thee! when thou shalt cease to spoil, thou shalt be spoiled; and when thou shalt make an end to deal treacherously, they shall deal treacherously with thee.’Isaiah 33:1 ( KJV) Lately, having watched the Nigerian political scene with keen interest, especially since the emergence of (Rtd.) General Muhammudu Buhari as the presidential flag bearer of the APC, curiously the diabolical frenzied attack on Buhari’s candidature and personality have been at an all time high by the ruling PDP. But rather than the shenanigans and immature antics of the ruling party to diminish Buhari’s popularity, the reverse seem to be the case, as the ‘Buhari-Brand’ seem to be breaking newer grounds of acceptance by even the most cynical critic. From a man perceived as being an Islamic fundamentalist, but when it came to the public domain that one of Buhari’s beautiful urban daughter is married to an Igbo man who is a Christian, even residing among the Igbo folks somewhere in Anambra state. The goons branded GMB as a religious bigot, yet it is on record that most of his domestic staffs are Christians. As a military Head of State in 1983-4 Buhari is famed to be someone who gives his Christians staffs off days on Sundays and during Christian holidays. The eighteen months Buhari held sway as head of state, is characterized as even a period when Nigeria had more Christians in any regime cabinet as serving ministers and military governors. Perhaps, the unrelenting traducers of GMB are still at a loss to be seeing a rebranded Buhari, who has done away with the old ways of doing things. They woke up one morning to see GMB in designer suit with pencil pant, ‘Hi-Fiving’ a five year old boy in a cozy executive office only fit for a president like president Obama, very fit, suave without air but someone who is ready for the job at hand ,to deliver the dividends of democracy. The guess is that the traducers areshell-shocked and pained that the Old horse is doing things differently; this has even made him to look younger and to be more appealing to all and sundry. Blogs and sites became awash with lovely eye-popping family picture of the Buhari’s, the pictures became the hot topic in places, offices, people Google for the pictures, enjoyed looking at the pictures and even shared the album on popular social net works. Even the campaign posters and ads are in tune with today’s reality. Have you seen GMB lookingdapper in Efik attire, the lovely Igbo wears matched with the famed Igbo red cap and ensemble, all these add up to the fact that over the years general Buhari had learned lots of experience on the political terrain. Rather than do the work of their own principal by selling his candidature to the teeming populace, the PDPgoons political garb and even intellectual pests who have continually fester on our collective wealth within the corridor of power at the center, go to town to use all sort of underhand antics by engaging in rumour, out-right falsehoods and mudslinging to do the hatchet job, for their pay master. They first started, with the age thing, thinking the septuagenarian toga will destabilize GMB, but Alas! That didn’t fly. Annoyingly, they changed tactics desperately started asking for Buhari’s certificateat the bemusement of a laughing global world, even the western world is shell-shocked about the kind of desperatepolitics we play in this clime, they called the gentle General an illiterate jackboot. When they noticed that no one bought that hug-wash Nigerians, even told these jobless peddlers of falsehood that even if GMB presents PHCN bill or bread label as certificate they will vote for him. The peddlers of falsehood asked for Buhari’s wife, GMB shot them-up, when majestically Hajiah Aishat Buhari stepped on the podium oozing class and elegance she held Nigerians spell bound with her charm and carriage. Not done with that, even president Jonathan in a very brazen unpresidential manner have used such demining terms in a desperate bid to make Buhari’s look unelectable to Nigerians, he called the General all sort of names like; methuselah, and a sufferer of dementia who cannot remember his phone numbers. The seeming attitudes of Mr. Jonathan smirk of a failed captain, who seems to be sinking with failure staring him in the face. The immature utterances of, serving ministers like Dayo Adeyeye, aides like Doyin Okupe, Rueben Abati, Olisa Metuh, Reno Omokri, the loquacious Femi Fani-Kayode even serving Governors like the ever fickle Ayo Fayose ,Olusegun Mimiko, and even top hierarchy of the ruling People’s Democratic Party leaves much to be desired, rather than talk about issues in their campaigns and looking for ways to mend their much maligned umbrella of incompetence, mediocrity a perceived haven for corrupt people with shady characters. The goons will stop at nothing, they went as far as digging into the lifestyle of Zarah, Buhari’s pretty under graduate daughter who is schooling in U.K, talking about her octane life style, within seconds the pretty Zarah became social network trend setter, pulled loads of followers on twitter and Facebook, became the most soughed new kid on the block on Google with several young dudes ogling wishing she was their date even the ever critical ladies out their have lauded Zarah as someone who will make a good first daughter. Not weary the GMB traducers latest antics is to brandish the health status of the APC presidential contestant as someone suffering from prostrate cancer; this has been debunked by Buhari, who admonished the perpetrators of falsehood, that he is hale and hearty, rather asking the Jonathanians to engage in issue based campaigns rather than campaigns of calumny and mudslinging. Even the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital the source through which the perpetrators of falsehood claim put the health Question mark on Buhari has come out to categorically called the disclaimed that such falsehood never ever emanated from her records. The Bible made us to understand that ‘the heart of men of perpetually wicked’ how could any sane human wish a fellow human being sick or falsely brand him as carrier of a terminal illness? By now have these perpetrators of falsehood not realized that all they have done so far had only continued to further the presidential cause of Muhammudu Buhari, the vilification they spewed is not even helping Goodluck Jonathan in his re-election bid. Rather all the antics are even making the opposition, especially Muhammudu Buhari to be more popular public eye. So who is afraid of the Muhammudu Buhari? From his antecedents Buhari has been known to be a man with strong contempt for indiscipline and corruption, a loyal lover of truth synonymous with ‘Sai-Gaskia!’ as GMB is branded in all the Northern states. There is a certain jittery corrupt school of thought and their mentors who are scared of even their own shadows. They have been going to town to pre-empt future rise in jail house in the country. Suddenly, our dear Mr. President Jonathan suddenly reminded us how he hopes to fight corruption if he is re-elected. He said he will build and fortify institutions to fight corruption the hydra-headed monster which remains Nigerian Achilles heel, has he forgotten institutions like almost moribund NAFDAC,EFFC,ICPC,BPE ?,etc…. Machiavelli argues that every ruler needs to be Bold, Competent, Tactful, Intelligent, Posses leadership skills, Command respect and must not lack Charisma. He said further that a ruler must learn how to conceal his intention, he should not give room (Negatively) for anybody to become more powerful than him lest he ruins himself. He argues that a ruler must 'sometimes' act as a lion and as cunning as a fox and must also have a foresight. In addition, he advice a ruler to understand vices as rulers virtues and vice-versa. Suddenly, Jonathan is desperately imposing his candidature on us with little or no form of tangible achievements in six years? Suddenly, the foot soldiers of JEG are swarming all over Nigerians to open books to show us the achievements of this administration which in most cases doesn’t translate to reality that really affects the average Nigerian on the street. The point must be noted, that JEG look like a nice fella being driven by ambition. But he is surrounded by lots of hypocrites and people of shady characters. Suddenly, religion has become a huge issue being bandied by the political folks to sway voters? Suddenly, it occurred to Mr. President to say that his generation has failed, rather that owning up to his own failings he generalized by trying to drag everyone on the fast dwindling JEG project? Suddenly, the ruling class at the federal level are afraid of change and the popularity of the opposition APC seem to have stung them in their stride, so much that they seem to have abandoned campaigning for the re-election of their principal, rather they keep engaging in blatant hate, mudslinging and falsehood all in a bid to the make the electorates not see anything good in the APC candidate. What the ignorant traducers of GMB don’t realize is that the electorates have made up their minds to vote for a presidential candidate with leadership quality to tame the serious security issues we have in the land, make corruption less attractive to the populace especially from those whom have been vested with the people’s trust to lead them for the next four years. Nigerians from all walks of life are saying their life isn’t any better than it was in 2010. Suddenly, the president Jonathan remembered the road leading to the North-east to empathize with our unfortunate folks who have in the last three years been pummeled, plundered and traumatized by Boko Haram insurgents, close to 300 days now the Chibok girls and several others whom the government cannot account for are missing, yet this government has not inspired hope in the world about the safe return of all those who have been abducted. Now several Nigerians are living within Nigeria and some niegbouring countries as Internally Displaced Persons, victims of unwholesome circumstances groping on hope that someday soon their will be a better tomorrow. In this year’s presidential election, Nigerians will be more interested in a leader with the capacity to take responsibility, a leader who will be sensitive to the feelings and yearnings of the teeming populace. Suddenly, this administration wants public goodwill by removing N10 from the pump price, after several hues and cries from members of the public and when governments in more sensible clime had already done the needful. THE QUESTION IS; IS N10 THE WORTH THE AVERAGE NIGERIAN? Talking about goodwill, president Jonathan rode to power on the back of avalanche of goodwill cum stroke of divine posterity four years ago, but through his actions, comportment and the clownish antics of desperate politicians, and certain morally bankrupt men and women, he surrounds himself with president Jonathan squandered all the trust and good will Nigerians bestow on him, by always looking to make the opposition the fall guy for his failings. Those who are verse in psychology will adduce the present state of our democratic practice and the way politicians especially the ruling party go about doing their thing as the Fear-Factor. Palpable fear is what makes a marketer not talk about his own product or brand rather engaging in talking about rival brand even to prospective buyer. Fear of inferiority is what will make a lady talk endlessly about her perceived rival rather than working on making herself more desirable for her man. Fear is what will make an organization to express desperate traits by engaging in mudslinging rival brand that is doing well in the market, fear is what will make you dwell by talking more about your rival. It is fear that will make a man engage in idle talk these and many other perennial childish traits. Nigerians please wake up to your civic responsibility, ensure you pick up your permanent voters card, on election days February 14th-28th play your part by electing credible persons into political office across board. Do not engage in electoral violence. God bless Nigeria!!! how witches claim they madeDagrin succeed

Confession of a witch
We helped Dagrin succeed

What do you get when a witch is on Youtube (a video sharing website where users can share, upload and watch videos)? She confesses about many things especially about late rapper, Dagrin. You also get mixed reactions in the form of “authoritative” analysis, illogical explanations, denials etc.
Lately, twitter was awash with info from Nigerians about “a witch” who claimed to be helping some Nigerians in climbing the ladder of success .

The “witch” (Esther Falodun) mentioned many notable Nigerians from Obasanjo to Babaginda but what caught many people’s attention was that Dagrin’s name is on her list as well as Fathia’s and Saidi Balogun in the video titled Asiri Nla.
Sources said the alleged “witch” died immediately after her confession in which she claimed to belong to the same group as Fathia Balogun and that she helped Dagrin to attain fame and popularity. Falodun said she had to cut him “short” when he did not honor his part of the deal.

Dagrin’s name in her list of beneficiaries surprised quite some people, because the deceased rapper died within six months of his rise to stardom. It’s indisputable that the late rapper became famous by featuring in YQ’s album in 2009. He established himself as an artist of note with lyrical rhythms and many collabos . His second album was a classic hit and many predicted he would rule 2010, but just when the fame and money started rolling in, Dagrin, whose real name is Olaitan Olaonipekun died few days after a ghastly motor accident at a Lagos hospital.

Falodun’s confession which is on CD is selling in Lagos and has resulted in a controversy about the authenticity of her confessions. Many believe her confessions were stage-managed.
Tunde, Dagrin’s manager, said the woman lied. “The whole thing was cooked-up . We don’t have time for people like that. The young woman also alleged she helped Obasanjo and Babaginda. How old was she to have helped these people? Secondly, she confessed in a room privately. A confession is not done in a room, it is done publicly. They are looking for what to eat” he concluded.

Ope Banwo said the video and confession CD is “riddled with inaccuracies, production and factual flaws” . “To be honest with you, the whole thing is fake. I have watched the video and I’m sure the whole thing is fake. The video depicted a woman who had been beaten . A chicken was beside the woman and it didn’t move for one hour. Does that look real to you…?

Lou and Dakore open up about their relationship—their past, their present, and their very bright future. Here is an excerpt:

“Neither Dakore nor Lou shies away from the fact that to make their relationship work, they have each had to make sacrifices. “You have to thank God again that you’re lucky enough to find someone that you feel that passionately about. We were lucky enough to find each other and it just works,” Lou says, frankly. And they definitely work at making sure that their relationship thrives. “We talk about things, we read books—psychology, religion—and try to make sure we are on the same page all the time.”

This very special February edition of TW Magazine, appropriately themed, “The Way Love Is” also features a charming fashion spread following the course of a romance—from, ‘boy meets girl’ to ‘happily ever after’.

From Sharing A School Bag With 2 Siblings to the Top Spot at UNILAG! Meet Babatunde Alawode – University of Lagos Top Graduate 2010 with a 4.93 GPA/First Class in Mechanical Engineering

By Gbenga Awomodu

Thursday 21 January 2011 was indeed a memorable one for thousands at the University of Lagos, as they received various degrees from the University after years of rigorous academic training. It was time to reward students who had put varying degrees of efforts into their respective programmes. Of the several thousands of first degree recipients were 119 First-Class graduates, among whom a particular student stood out. 21-year old Babatunde Olusegun Alawode, a graduate of Mechanical Engineering, emerged the Best Graduating Student with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.93/5.00. In this exclusive interview with BN Editorial Assistant, Gbenga Awomodu, this young man who wants to solve Nigeria’s energy problems, shares interesting bits about his childhood, friendship, education, and, of course, Nigeria.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am Tunde Alawode, a native of Abeokuta in Ogun State. I come from Semore in Imo, somewhere in Obafemi-Owode Local Government. I am from a polygamous home and I have 28 siblings. I am the 21st child, and seventh of eight from my mum. I recently graduated from the University of Lagos with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Your graduating CGPA of 4.93 translates to how many A’s and B’s?

I had one C and four B’s. Two of the B’s were in my first semester in Unilag, and the remaining two in the fourth and fifth semesters respectively. The C was in a physics laboratory course in my second semester -everyone in class had the same grade. I did, altogether 76, courses.

Please let us into your academic history, pre-university.

I started at High Class Nursery and Primary School, Ikotun, Lagos. Later, I followed my sister, Moji, to her school, Folem Private School (then God’s Time Is the Best Nursery & Primary School, Igando, Lagos). I started at the bottom of the class, but in primary three, I ‘suddenly’ came third. By primary five I was steadily in second position behind Moji. I was enrolled at St. Saviour’s High School, Ijegun, Lagos in September 1999. For the first two terms, I was again second position behind my sister until I came third in the third term of JSS 1, beaten by a girl named Nengi. At the beginning of the next term, the most brilliant students in the neighbouring class were brought to mine. I was scared of even performing worse, so I became more serious. I came first that term and haven’t looked back since then. However, there was a particular very disappointing incident during my JSCE examinations, which made me decide to prove a point – I had all A’s and a P (in IntroTech) in my JSCE. In the 2005 WASSCE, I had all (eight) A1’s and a B2 (in English Language). I heard that was the best result in Lagos State at that time.

Why did you study Mechanical Engineering?

In SS 2, I didn’t know what exactly I wanted to do with my life. I soon realized that I loved things engineering. I liked medicine too, but hated the sight of blood and disliked that drugs were too bitter. If I were a scientist that specializes in making drugs sweeter, I would be motivated! My favourite subjects were Physics, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Technical Drawing and Chemistry, so I thought I would not fare badly in Engineering. I read a copy of Awake! magazine which explained the bleak future of the world with current trends in energy demand and use, which would eventually make the world uninhabitable. I decided that my life must make a global impact in the area of energy. Imagine if you only required a litre of petrol to move from Lagos to Sokoto, or if your car could run on only water.

What were your goals at the beginning of your journey in UNILAG and how did you fare in achieving them?

I didn’t have any goal at the beginning because I simply wasn’t yet mature. I just thought it was still like secondary school. I was brought to reality after my first semester, when I had a CGPA of 4.58 – I had two B’s. I was so discouraged that I formulated my goal. Simply put: ‘success or failure will not affect me. When I am successful, I will not allow it get into my head, but look forward to conquering more ground next time. When I fail, I learn my lessons, erase all memories of the failure because I cannot afford to allow it weigh me down, and move on to do far better next time.’ Did I achieve my goal? I guess that’s why I am being interviewed today.

Share some of your favourite childhood experiences as well as the challenges you encountered in the university and how you overcame them?

I shared one khaki school bag with two of my siblings in primary school. We took turns carrying the bag to and from school. One day, I was not supposed to carry it, but it was left at home. Since I was the last person, I picked it up and ran to catch up with my brother (I think he was the one supposed to carry it), but he refused to carry it. I dropped it and left it in the middle of the road. The teacher caned me and asked to go pick it up from the road, so I had to walk half the way home! In the university, sometime in the middle of first semester year three, I lost all desire to study. I had had 5.00 and 4.95 the previous year. That I was not really learning much from the lecturers and could not set higher academic goals really irritated me. Thank God for my friend, Opeyemi (Ogunlade), who got me back on track.

How about your relationship with lecturers and other students, especially the girls? Any special one yet, or soon?

I wasn’t really known by my lecturers till the third year. I am one of the few students that can enter any lecturer’s office at any time, but my relationship with them wasn’t so cordial. I have only a few ladies in my life. I respect every other one. About the last question, I would make no comment.

In what ways did the relationships you built with people help or harm you in achieving your goals? What steps did you take to manage or end wrong relationships?

I actually had only a few friends while in school – Opeyemi Ogunlade, Jide Oshinkalu, Yetunde Alo, Akin Oyedele and Segun Bolarinwa. I had mentors (Bolaji Ayoade, Bola Ogunoiki, Kemi Ojo), fantastic roommates (Azeez Bakare, Mayowa Oyedere), and dozens of acquaintances. They shaped me to be who I am now. I met a lot of people, but only moved with those who had goals for themselves such that we rubbed off positively on one another.

What were the most important lessons you learnt from your university experience?

You can be who you want to be. Just put your mind to it! Another very important thing people overlook is that, most times, the thing that stands between us and our dreams is the fact that we do not believe we can do it.

What other activities did you take part in apart from academics?

I sometimes used my time to encourage junior students to be better in their academics and formally became a resource person to the Counselling Unit of the University of Lagos in my final year. I meet students with academic problems and try to help. I also speak at some events. I was elected as President of the Mechanical Engineering Students Association and we were arguably the best in interdepartmental events – 2nd place Dean’s Cup, 1st place ULES Prodigio, a faculty-wide quiz competition, and 1st place e-Ingenium, a faculty-wide final year students paper presentation contest. We also held several departmental events.

Are there things you would have loved to do while in school?

Yes! I wanted to learn French and another language. I also wanted to learn to swim.

What is the single most important decision you have made in life?

Giving my life to Christ and deciding to seek His help in transforming me to be a better person. My home was actually also a pagan one – my father just gave his life to Christ in December 2010. Yet, God gave all of us the wherewithal to resist his insistence that we should not go to church. God has truly kept me and my siblings, and is now keeping us as a family. In secondary school, I did not collect school allowance (by choice), but whenever I was in dire need, like when I broke or unintentionally destroyed laboratory equipment, I would pray to God and miraculously receive an amount (never from my patents) that would cover the cost. Also, during MEG 202 (fluid mechanics) test, I wrote poorly and forgot to write my name on the answer sheet. That should earn me a zero. Again, God came in through a roommate’s friend who took me to the lecturer. I not only located my script, but was given a high score in the test that I surely did not deserve. The friends that I have met have all been so wonderful and so positive in my life. Only God could bring your way such a wonderful person as Ogunlade Opeyemi, mentors like Bolaji Ayoade and room mates like Bakare Azeez. I don’t think I deserved them, but God used them to bring me to where I am now.

What are your thoughts about the Mechanical Engineering profession in Nigeria and the employability of engineering graduates in Nigeria, considering the total collapse of the manufacturing industry, a major employer of engineers in Nigeria?

Most things in Nigeria are collapsing or have collapsed because we do not have the right leaders in the right places. The right political structure alone cannot guarantee an improvement of Nigeria. If Nigerian scientists, engineers, accountants, entrepreneurs, politicians, administrators, law enforcers, lawyers, etc, are all quality professionals in their own right, how won’t we have a great country? What can the government do if it builds specialist hospitals, yet Nigerian doctors have not acquired the necessary capabilities to man them to world-class standards? I believe that a country full of successful people would invariably be successful. The onus lies on each person to play his part. Regarding employability of Nigerian engineering graduates, we should look inwards and create jobs rather than seeking them. Of course, one would need to first learn the ropes by being an employee. Developing the capability to function should be a priority for engineering graduates, so we can be relevant and develop the few industries available.

What do you think about the exodus of engineering graduates into other fields of endeavour after their undergraduate studies?

I think the economic realities dictate such. Truth is: engineers may be the most versatile people and are trained to be able to adapt to any task. I would only advise engineers not to forget their first love – there are still many things we are needed to do.

Any words of encouragement you want to share with young people still in the university?

Many university students have academic challenges, some due to no fault of theirs. I think the first thing for you to do is to recognise what the causes of the drawbacks are. Recognize and then take positive steps to put yourself back on the track to where you want to get to. Seek help from others, if need be. And most importantly, believe in yourself. Be consistent and be assured that things can only get better for you. School life is not all about academics, but the total development of the mind and body. Prioritizing is the key to an effective student life.

What do you plan to do next and where do you hope to be, ten years from now?

Service, then Masters and (most probably) doctorate degrees. In ten years’ time, by God’s grace, I would be preparing to enter into or already be in the business side of Energy.

How do you relax when you’re not working on some mechanical stuff?

I watch movies and read novels. I play table tennis, and I am above average at it. I still struggle to beat my elder brother, Oye, though.

Any other thing(s) you want to share with our esteemed readers?

For some readers only the statistics will stick while others will take in the useful parts – what made him successful in UNILAG? Does anything he has said apply to me? I encourage you to make what you read actually meaningful to you. That’s what makes an excellent student. Finally, you can be what you want to be. I still tell myself this too – I have not yet arrived oh!. We can be the best, if we decide to pay the price.

Nikky Laoye

Anyone who is familiar with the artistry and stagecraft of Yinka Davies will appreciate another talented contemporary artiste called Nikky Laoye. What she lacks in frame, she compensates for with the energy and zeal in her music.

Interestingly the two have not met. Asked whether she had come across Yinka Davies, Laoye smiled and said she looked forward to meeting her one day.

“People always ask me this question,” she said. “They say we are the same in stature and that we are both loud when we perform. One day, I saw her picture and thought it was mine. On closer look, I realised that it was not mine. People say we are the same. I actually look forward to meeting her one day.”

On stage at her album launch last Saturday, Laoye held the audience at the ever-busy Shoprite supermarket in Lekki spellbound as she launched into number after number and the crowd kept asking for more.

A granddaughter of a professional musician raised in a family of notes and tunes, Nikki has always been surrounded by opportunities to develop her musical genes. She is a princess from the Laoye royal family of Ede in Osun State where the legendary master talking drummer, the late Timi of Ede, Oba John Adetoyese Laoye, reigned.

The late monarch is reputed for making the talking drum popular, which today makes Ede a reference point in the art of drumming. He together with his group of skilled drummers and poets entertained the Queen of England when she first visited Nigeria and thereafter in her palace in England. And until his death in the 70s, he remained an entertainer even while he held sway as the traditional ruler of Ede.

It was not surprising therefore that throughout high school, Nikky remained an active member of the school band. She later began her professional music career with the female group, Soul Sistas, comprising herself, Aboyowa Tene and Debola Kester), while studying Computer Science at the University of Ibadan.

She told Appetiser that her degree in Computer Science had greatly enhanced her musical talent. “I am also a producer and we use computers to do this. I work very closely with my younger brother, Xblaze, who is highly talented. Our outfit is called RocSteady ’86 Productions and that is where my debut album, Angel 4 Life, is coming from.”

Nikki is also a voice over/radio jingle artiste. Fidelity Bank’s No Greater Feeling, Reltel’s Make it Happen, The Palms’ Mall@Xmas and MTN’s Xmas GO are some of her creative outputs.

Besides, some recent Nigerian and Ghanaian home movies such as Where the Heart Lies, Mission 2 Nowhere and In the Eyes of my Husband have her vocal signature on their soundtracks.

Inasmuch as she would want to be seen as singing gospel, she prefers to describe her music as Christian contemporary music. Her unique sound is spiced up in an eclectic mix of influences such as alternative rock, R&B, soul and hip hop, as she shifts effortlessly between styles while demonstrating strength in songwriting.

According to her, “I am not restricted to any particular style of music.

All I want to do is talk about the great God who I love so much, speak words of life and truth to the soul of man and touch peoples’ lives through my music.”

Nikki’s debut, Angel 4 Life, features artistes such as Jeremiah Gyang, Lagimo stars, Rooftop MCs and Blaise, with tracks like Angel 4 Life, Believer, Get Ur Praise On, Eyin Loba, Taka Sufe (snap and whistle), Someone 2 Love, Never Felt This Way Before, Healing Waters, Whatever It Takes, Baba Loke and Nikki Praise.

The vivacious artiste told Appetiser that all she did now was music, but that when it is time for her to settle down, God would guide her.

“I am not in any serious relationship right now,” she said. “But when it is time, I surely will do so. I want to be a successful wife to a successful husband and have a successful home. But right now, I am still looking for the man and I will find him very soon. The man of my dream is somebody who loves God and loves me dearly. He can be tall or short, fair or dark but someone who is God-fearing.”

Asked whether she preferred an artiste like herself, she said she had left all that in the hand of God. “I am not restricting it to anything. I am not saying he must be a musician. God will decide that for me. We will meet and I know that I will get married to a man that loves God, because any man that fears God will love you; he will not treat you badly.

“I want a man that is crazy about me and successful. When I say successful, I am not talking in terms of money but someone who knows what he wants to do and how he wants to achieve it.

“But I know that whoever I want to marry will never ask me to stop music.

The December 2010 issue of Genevieve Magazine is gloriously festive! The issue is tagged “The Exclusive Bridal Edition” and features bride-to-be superstar Nollywood actress, musician and soon to be Talkshow host, Dakore Egbuson on the cover.
Dakore is engaged and will soon be married to her longtime love, Olumide Akande. Here is an excerpt from the magazine.

However, Dakore has been grabbing all the headlines lately for something a little more personal: her four-and-a-half year old romance with her beau, Olumide Akande. She grins and wriggles her left fingers playfully, revealing her exquisite ring when Genevieve touched on the exciting subject of her engagement and imminent marriage.

“We just connected intellectually and we have a lot in common, too,” Dakore says of the initial attraction. “He really loves music as I do; and he knows those little things that make me relaxed around him. We have each other’s back, which is really great because that is usually the foundation of a good marriage.”

Dakore also chats about her career and what her fans can expect from her in 2011. For the photoshoot, Dakore wore pieces by Nigerian designer, Ituen Basi and rather than her signature locs, we see her hair in sexy ringlets.

The issue also features an exclusive bridalwear photoshoot and other exciting wedding themed stories

Role Reversal: Women take Charge!

Role Reversal: Women take Charge!

By TJ O'Karo

A few weeks ago, my cousin put up a status update on her facebook page. I can’t remember her exact words but it read something like this, “Today my pastor gave an example of a girl who had sex with a guy she had only been seeing for three weeks. He expressed shock at this, wondering what kind of girl would do something like that, but I’m thinking maybe she just wanted sex.”

As I read that status update, I couldn’t help but think it was rather blunt, but in a funny and ironic sort of way. The girl was just expressing a fact that most men (and some women) this side of 21st century Africa have not come to terms with yet: the fact that a woman can choose to have sex with whomever she wants to, however she wants to and whenever she wants to.

You see as a man, and an African man at that, the idea that we have is that women are to remain passive regarding affairs of sexual activity. Yes, I know that the women in the West have been liberated sexually for years but we aren’t in the West now, are we? The way it works around here is that a guy spots a woman that he finds attractive then toasts her. Whether or not he is really interested in going into a relationship with her or not, is moot when sex is involved because as we do know having sex and being in a relationship with that person we’re sleeping with is not always mutually inclusive. Now the truth is most guys wouldn’t mind if they can have all the sex they want without the added strings of a serious commitment. It is seen as a normal thing, right guys? But why do we find it difficult to grasp that the same can apply to women? Picture this, women behaving like men and sowing their wild oats about! Shudder! Shudder or not, this is something that has been going on surreptitiously for years in our society. While the guys reading this might be in denial, I know the women know what I’m talking about. Guys foolishly think that they hold all the cards when it comes to getting it on. For real mates, do you think that booty call, friends-with-benefits classmate, or neighbour or colleague is just sitting around twiddling her thumbs, waiting for you to cycle back to her? Yeah, perhaps if you are doing the job properly, and as often as she wants it; if not, dude, she’s getting it on with one or two other guys.

It is not the intention of this article to highlight the promiscuity of women o! Far from it. I only intend to bring to light the fact that women now make their own choices as regards sexual encounters and escapades. Allow me to illustrate. Once upon a time, many years ago when yours truly was just out of secondary school, and was at the University of House, there was this neighbour that would come and help about the house.

You see, I was the only one at home at the time and we did not have a house-help and so she volunteered/was co-opted by my mum to come clean the house, fetch water etc. Now I was still largely a very good boy then and it took me a while to notice how lovely looking this girl was. Never mind that she was exotic and was older than I was, the girl was what I have now learnt to describe as voluptuous. I’d wake up and walk to the kitchen where she would be doing one thing or the other and just scope her until she either noticed me or I broke the silence. We began to chat and I generally used to keep her company and make her laugh while she was doing her chores. Before long I started making moves, trying to get a kiss here and there etc. Her initial reaction was to discourage me but I was having none of it; I was bored out of my mind and it was rather exciting to seduce a woman. With time she’d kiss me back and all that but she never let things go beyond that, try as I may. This went on, on and off for about three months and I had already given up the idea of getting any when one Sunday evening (I was home alone of course) I heard a knock on the door. I opened it and there she was with a smile on her face. She asked if anyone else was home and she came in. However, I was not in the mood to get turned again so I invited her to sit while I went ahead to finish my movie. I offered her something to drink but she was not interested. Every now and again I’d look back at her and she would smile and give me a look. Then I noticed her sitting position and that sent a clear message that things were going to be different this time round. And they were! It baffled me for months after that as to why the day she chose to get down I didn’t have to psych, persuade, or trick her into it; she did it because she wanted to and not because of my seduction skills. Period.

Come on guys! Do you remember how in school you thought you were the bad guy, the one making all the moves, toasting, macking and seducing women left, right and centre? It might come as a shock to you but maybe you weren’t as bad as you think you were; maybe the women wanted it just as much as you did! It was very easy for us to think of the girls as passive creatures waiting to be blocked by us, and then toasted over a few weeks, then invited over to the our place and then due to our Art of Seduction skills, she yields to us. Wrong! Haven’t you figured it out yet that the occurrence of sex is all down to the woman? She chooses the time, the place and how often it occurs. Ask married men, they will tell you.

The issue of frequency depends on how good you are at it, because if it was not good for her, then you would probably never see her again (except she’s run out of options of course!). Dudes, didn’t you ever have that female friend who would just turn up at your place uninvited, or who would call you out of the blues knowing full well that eventually one of you was going to get invited over, even across state lines?! Hope you are getting the picture now? Yup, you were the booty call not her! (Note: if you were that good, over time you would not have to work so had to get her to come around or get invited over. You feel me?) Guys are highly predictable and girls have used this to their advantage for years, not bothering to correct the erroneous notion that men call the shots. Men need to realize that women are creatures of discretion. They cloak their sexual activeness behind a veil of discretion, which dresses them up as innocent damsels caught in the wily snares of debauched men.

Even in areas of sexual specifics, women dominate, they tell us what they want, how they want it and in our aim to please we obey them. The men that can’t get with the programme get moved over for more obedient and willing participants. Women have broken up with boyfriends, changed their minds about their life partners, cheated on their partners and even gotten divorced on account of this. I know too many examples. Women today have no patience for such sexual ineptitudes.

Thus, is the sexual revolution and liberation that has been going on behind the scenes for years. Women are in charge, whether they come off as passive or aggressive in such matters. It may come as a shock if you are a traditional African man. Guys, my advice to you is to get with the programme; it might be more of a benefit than a cultural anomaly at the end of the day.

romance: The Best Break Up Ever!

BN Hot Topic: The Best Break Up Ever!
Posted on Friday, December 3rd, 2010 at 10:17 AM
By Glory Edozien

In today’s world where people are jumping off bridges to meet the mate of their dreams, people are still breaking up! Believe it or not, but not everyone you see holding hands at the cinema is actually in a loving committed relationship. Some people are actually plotting for the best time to wave goodbye to their partner.

A friend of mine recently split up with her boyfriend of 3 months. According to her, he had way too many annoying habits and she just couldn’t put up with them any longer. While I don’t begrudge her reasons for breaking up with the said boyfriend, I did find her break up tactics a bit novel. She just stopped picking up his calls. The poor guy even tried coming to see her at home and she instructed everyone in her house to always tell him she was out! Two weeks later and the dude got the message. The phone calls and unannounced visits stopped. When I questioned her further about what seemed to me an unfair way to sever ties with another human being, she informed me that her method of breaking up was the best because it avoids the unnecessary emotional discussion of “it’s not you, it’s me”. I disagreed.

However, after my conversation with my friend, I started thinking about what really is the best way to break up with someone? Technically, a breakup usually affects parties differently. The person initiating the breakup, in most cases, is usually in a better position than the one receiving the breakup news. Particularly in situations when the other party assumed things were going on well. So given that at least one party will always walk away from a broken relationship hurt, is there really a ‘good’ way of delivering bad news?

Personally, I always believe in communication. I think it’s always good to give the other party a chance to know why you have reached the decision and as well give them a chance to say their own two cents. I also think breakups should always, where possible, be done in person. No over-the-phone, e-mail or BB breakups! That’s just plain rude! But I am an idealist, and I know not everyone agrees with me.

So what do you guys think? Is there really a good way of breaking up with someone? Have any of your exes been less than generous in their methods of ending your relationship? Have any of your breakup plans backfired?

MUSIC PRODUCER COBAMS WEDS SWEETHEART.

A Beautiful Day for A Blessed Couple: Superstar Producer Cobhams Asuquo weds his sweetheart Ojuola Olukanni
Posted on Friday, December 3rd, 2010 at 10:32 PM
By BellaNaija.com

It was a day filled with blessings, joy, music and love as Nigerian music maestro Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo wed Ojuolape Veronica Olukanni on the 2nd of December 2010.

For Cobhams and Ojuola, it was truly a blessing to celebrate their union surrounded by their close family and friends. Their marriage was solemnized at the Redeemed Christian Church of God – The King is Coming Parish at the Redemption Camp. The General Overseer of the RCCG – Pastor Enoch Adeboye along with his wife were present at the ceremony and played a major role in the proceedings as they prayed for the couple and helped usher them into married life.

After their church ceremony, Cobhams and Ojuola proceeded to their wedding reception at the Redemption Resort. The theme of the reception was “Pray, Eat, Love & Dance” and they did that and more! Ojuola reminiscent of a Victorian-era princess in her elegant lace wedding dress and Coby perfectly complemented his wife in his three-piece grey-blue wedding suit.

It was an absolutely beautiful event, the reception hall was decked in orange, silver and white, with twinkling fairy lights and beautiful swaths which created an intimate yet festive ambiance. As expected, music played a major role in the proceedings; there were performances from artistes including Bez and Timi Dakolo serenaded the couple during their first dance. Cobhams and Ojuola’s first dance was thrilling and romantic, they held each close and savoured this special moment – then Cobhams twirled his bride and then whipped her up into his arms! It was a thoroughly romantic moment.

A Beautiful Day for A Blessed Couple. BN wishes Cobhams and Ojuola a blessed life together as one!

hip-hop act 9ICE DUMPS WIFE TONY PAYNE

“We are separating” – 9ice confirms marital split from wife Toni Payne
Posted on Friday, January 8th, 2010 at 4:56 pm

By Nolita

9icetoni
Sad news filtered through the entertainment community today. Just as speculation was mounting, an official press release from 9ice’s PR representatives confirmed the news. Nigerian musician 9ice and his wife of one and half years, beauty entrepreneur Toni Payne have broken up.

According to the press release, “The couple have agreed to separate for a while, even though they continue to remain good friends and business partners…And it is their wish that we all respect their privacy at this period”.

The couple who wed in July 2008 began dating before the musician attained widespread acclaim and success. toni-payne-pregnant-with-9ices-baby
Many credit the combination of 9ice’s talent and Toni’s managerial and publicity skills as the formula for the singer’s success. The couple is blessed with a son – Zion. According to the press release, Toni Payne will retain primary custody of their child.

This is truly an unfortunate development. As we all know, marriage is a tough journey and only the two people within that relationship can paint the full picture of the situation. We wish both 9ice and Toni Payne the best in this difficult time.
